Kenyan dancehall musician Shavey who rose to fame for his song ‘Gyal’ with Slice has passed on today morning.

Details of Shavey’s passing on are still scanty but a few rumors said to be from witnesses at the scene indicate that he was ran over by a matatu in Kayole after he missed his step. The music fraternity, artistes and fans have sent out their condolences on social media to the family of the deceased.

Considered to be among the best dancehall musicians in Kenya, Shavey shook the airwaves in 2009 with the ‘Gyal‘ hit that made topped charts in Jamaica. He featured Slice on the song and it was a big hit in Kenya, and beyond. He went on to release more songs however ‘Gyal’ was his best in his not so glittering career. Despite having hit songs, his life was not one to admire and he reduced himself from a big music star to being a matatu conductor in buses plying the Kayole route, all in an effort to try and make ends meet.

Shavey had a rough time in September 2013 when he was arrested by the Kayole area chief after he was nabbed breaking into a butchery to steal meat. He faced charges but was later released and he resumed with his matatu business. His partner Slice also did not make it big in life and he faded off from the limelight despite constant efforts to make a major comeback in the music business.

Despite all the shortcomings, Shavey’s contribution to the Kenyan music industry can not be ignored and he has been greatly respected by the community and fellow artistes who have shared condolence messages with his grieved family.

Rest In Peace Shavey!
