Uganda’s hope in long distance runner, Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, was finally fulfilled in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth games held in Australia. On Sunday morning, Cheptegei won a gold medal in the 5,000m final race, registering a time of 13:50.83.
The 21 year old Ugandan runner beat Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed who came second with a time of 13:52.78. The race took place at the Carrara Stadium and Joshua was in company of two other Ugandans; Thomas Ayeko and Phillip Kipyeko, who finished fourth and sixth respectively.
Many Ugandans sent out their congratulatory messages to the Ugandan runner including President Yoweri Museveni and singer who turned politician Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert a.k.a Bobi Wine. The singer sent out his congratulations through his social media platforms.
Congratulations Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, Congratulations Uganda. Our very own has brought gold home after winning the men’s 5000m final at the #CommonwealthGames2018 and that makes us all very proud of you Kiprui. Your achievement speaks of the great potential residing in many other Ugandans only if we paid more attention to games and sports. What we must do is appreciate the value of sports, invest more resources in the sector and make deliberate effort to nurture talent.
