Just as she still celebrates her birthday, Kenyan film director, Wanuri Kahiu, has been named on the prestigious list of the top Hollywood personalities as a new member of the ‘The Academy’, a movie organization that oversees the Oscars.
East Africa has had its fair share of the limelight at the top level as regards the entertainment industry in the past few years. From singers, artists, to movie actors and actresses, to now movie directors. Many East Africans are achieving their goals and realizing how valid their dreams are at global levels. We have seen the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Daniel Kaluuya, among others trending for their exceptional work.

The latest addition to the list of East Africans making it big on international level is Kenya’s film director, Wanuri Kahiu. She is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and she has worked on six major film projects so far, some of which have been screened at various film festivals around the world.
Wanuri is the co-founder of AFROBUBBLEGUM, a media company that supports, creates and commissions fun, fierce and frivolous African art. One of her biggest movie projects, Rafiki, on which she worked with Ugandan author Monica Arac de Nyeko, is one that is anticipated to break barriers.
Wanuri was invited to The Oscar Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to join other big names in the global film industry. A happy and excited Wanuri accepted the invite and broke the good news to her followers and fans on social media;

The members in The Academy are global icons some of whom include; Daniel Kaluuya, Jada Pinkett Smith, Sarah Silverman, Damon Wayans, Mindy Kaling, Tiffany Haddish, Kumail Nanjiani, Blake Lively, Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle, Gina Rodriguez, Amandla Stenberg, among others.
