She was born in Nairobi to Sande Newman (father), a Ugandan retired pilot and Alex Newman (mother), a retired UNHCR worker of mixed English-Ugandan race. Crystal spent most of her childhood in Zambia until she was 10 when the family returned to Uganda.

Crystal attended Makerere College for both her “O” and “A” levels. She then joined Makerere University where she graduated with a bachelors degree in Mass Communication.

She got married in 2005 to Fred Kavulu and the couple have three children. In 2011 she was crowned Mrs World-Uganda and represented Uganda at the Mrs World pageant in Florida, USA.

During her time at Sanyu FM, Crystal Newman hosted a long list of both local and international celebrities. She has hosted the likes of Mowzey Radio (RIP), Jose Chameleone, Nancy Kacungira, Juliana Kanyomozi, among others. She has no regrets for all the time she spent at Sanyu, she’s rather overly grateful.

It has truly been a privilege and an honor! I have learnt so much from the people I have worked and interacted with. Blessings.
