A ceremony with two heads of state, and very many other senior citizens, celebrities, and so much glamour. All that happened at former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi’s home in Kololo on Saturday as he gave away his niece, Bridget Birungi, to South African president’s son, Andile Ramaphosa.
President Museveni, President Cyril Ramaphosa, former Uganda Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi, current Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, Chief Justice Bart Katurebe, Jim Muhwezi, Katikiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga, Bank Of Uganda Governor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebire, renown entrepreneurs Sir. Gordon Wavamunno, Sudhir Ruparelia, among others – all attended the function that happened at Mbabazi’s home in Kololo, Kampala on Saturday 4th August 2018.
Bridget Birungi, Amama Mbabazi’s niece, was introducing Andile Ramaphosa to her parents. Andile is the South African president’s son, and he came with a big delegation of friends and family. They arrived at 11:00am and the function got underway.
Amama Mbabazi and president Museveni, shared a table and a few light moment at the function despite their political differences. In his speech, Mbabazi noted that his friendship with Museveni goes way back and cannot fade away. He said;
We have been together for more than 40 years. Out of the 29 people we went with to Mozambique, only him (Museveni), Salim Saleh and Ivan Koreta are still alive. I thank you for accepting our invite and it demonstrates the leadership Africa requires.
President Museveni also acknowledged and thanked Amama Mbabzi for his role in the liberation struggle. The president said;
From 1974, Mbabazi and Jackie (his wife) contributed to the struggle greatly. I must especially thank them for raising Bridget whose real father (Rwakairu) was killed on account of supporting our struggle. I thank Bridget’s mother, Peace, for being a strong woman.
South African president, Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his pleasure in being accepted into the family and how beautiful his son’s wife was.
We are delighted we are not going back empty handed. We didn’t have to go to Lake Victoria but we caught the biggest fish ever imagined.
